There’s a truly powerful energy in the air at Startup SuperNova these days! We’ve just kicked off the accelerator after the Verslunarmannahelgi holiday, and it’s clear that our entrepreneurs are not on summer break. This place is buzzing with ambition, energy, and a relentless drive to build something impactful for Icelandic society.
Today we welcomed Kjartan Þórsson, founder of Prescriby, to Gróska for the very first Founders Lunch of Startup SuperNova 2025. Kjartan shared his entrepreneurial journey with the participants and highlighted the importance of resilience and courage when tackling complex challenges.
Prescriby is an Icelandic health tech company that has gained attention for its digital solutions and healthcare services supporting the safe and structured tapering of strong painkillers, sedatives, and sleeping pills. At the core of its operations is helping people reduce or discontinue the use of addictive medications through personalized and measurable care — a service that has already been used by hundreds of people across the country.

Kjartan and his team began their journey in 2019 when they took part in Startup Reykjavík with the project TrackEHR, laying the foundation for the philosophy and technology that Prescriby is built on today. Since then, they’ve been highly active in the startup scene, participating in idea sprints and international collaboration projects — including TINC in 2021.
Today, Prescriby operates a specialized tapering clinic in Iceland, where individuals receive guidance and clinical monitoring through the company’s digital solution. The goal is to improve people’s quality of life by supporting the safe tapering of medications and making treatment both better and safer for patients. Prescriby is now working on opening a similar clinic in the United States, bringing Icelandic innovation and technology to a wider audience.
The story of Prescriby is a telling example of how Icelandic innovation and collaboration can create real impact. Kjartan emphasized the importance of listening to the target audience, working closely with users and experts, and continuously developing solutions that address real needs. With examples like this, it’s clear that Startup SuperNova is the ideal platform for entrepreneurs who want to make a difference — and we look forward to following the next steps of all the teams in the accelerator.
